Plasterboard Painting Services in Haywards Heath
Freshly Plastered Walls
New skim plaster is alkaline and porous. It must be fully dry before any paint is applied — painting too soon traps moisture, causing bubbling or peeling later. Drying time depends on plaster thickness, room temperature, and ventilation.
A freshly skimmed room in a loft conversion typically needs two to four weeks before it is ready to paint. We assess readiness before starting — a surface that looks dry can still hold moisture beneath the surface.
Sealing Coat Application
The first coat on new plaster must be a diluted sealing coat — not a standard full-strength emulsion. This allows the paint to soak into the surface evenly rather than sitting on top and drying unevenly. We apply it across all walls and the ceiling, working it into the surface thoroughly.
Skipping the sealing coat is the most common reason newly plastered rooms look patchy. It is not a shortcut we take.
First and Second Fix
After the sealing coat has dried, the room is ready for the first full coat of emulsion. We check for any nibs, bumps, or plaster splashes left by the plasterer and lightly sand these back before rolling on. The second full coat follows once the first is dry.
If any areas are still absorbing more than others, a localised additional coat is applied. Loft conversions on 1930s–1950s detached homes in central Haywards Heath are a common job type.
New Build and Extension
New build rooms and freshly built extensions often contain a mix of plasterboard, skim plaster, and existing painted surfaces. We work through the room methodically, treating each area according to its surface type, then applying a uniform topcoat.
Haywards Heath Decorators work on new build rooms and extensions throughout the Mid Sussex area, including Burgess Hill, Cuckfield, and Balcombe.
Plaster Repair and Preparation
Old or damaged plaster in existing rooms sometimes needs repair. Hairline cracks, blown sections, and surface imperfections are filled and sanded before any paint is applied. We use the appropriate filler for each type of repair — fine surface cracks get a different treatment from deeper structural cracks.
For rooms in Victorian or Edwardian properties where original lime plaster is present, see our period property painting service for more detail on these surfaces.

Our Plasterboard Painting Process
1. Surface Check
We inspect the plasterboard or new plaster for dryness, condition, and any issues needing attention before starting. We never rush this stage.
2. Preparation
Cracks are filled, nibs sanded, and any plaster splashes removed from surfaces and trim. The room is ready for the sealing coat.
3. Sealing Coat
A diluted sealing coat is applied to all new plaster surfaces. This controls absorption before full coats follow. Any patches of uneven absorption are noted and addressed.
4. Full Coats
Two full coats of emulsion are applied. Additional localised coats are added where needed for even coverage across the whole room.
5. Final Check
The finished room is checked in good light. Any thin or uneven areas are touched up before we leave.
Plasterboard Painting Costs in Haywards Heath
Prices vary depending on room size, the amount of new plaster present, and how much preparation is required. Call 01444 719922 to arrange a visit and fixed quote.

What Drives the Price
Room size is the primary factor — whether the full room is new plaster or a mix of new and existing surfaces matters. New plaster rooms generally take longer than straight repaints due to drying time checks and the sealing coat stage.
The number of coats and amount of filling or repair work before painting begins also affect the final price.
Typical Price Ranges
Newly plastered bedroom in a 1960s–1970s semi in Burgess Hill — sealing coat plus two full coats, walls only: £260–380.
Loft conversion room in a 1930s–1950s detached in central Haywards Heath — sealing coat plus two full coats, ceiling and walls, approx. 20 sq metres: £320–480.
Extension and Mixed-Surface Rooms
New extension room in a Victorian detached in Lindfield or Cuckfield — mixed surfaces, preparation and full paint system: £380–550.
Mixed rooms with both newly plastered and existing painted areas are common after extensions or repairs. We treat each area according to its surface type.
