Front Door Painting Services in Haywards Heath
Timber Front Doors
Timber front doors on period properties require more preparation than any other exterior surface. Moulded panels, deep rebates, and accumulated layers of old paint all need careful attention before a new finish goes on.
Period cottages and Victorian houses along Lindfield High Street are among the most visible residential properties in Mid Sussex. We treat these doors with the attention they deserve: strip back to sound timber where necessary, fill any surface damage, prime correctly, and apply a hard exterior finish by hand.
uPVC and Composite Doors
Modern homes in Bolnore Village and newer Burgess Hill estates typically have uPVC or composite front doors. These can be painted with a specialist adhesion primer followed by a compatible exterior topcoat, giving a fresh colour without replacement.
The key step on uPVC is surface preparation. Skipping the primer on uPVC results in a finish that chips and peels within months. We advise at the site visit on whether the existing door is in a condition that will give a good and lasting result.
Colour Selection
Heritage shades from ranges such as Farrow and Ball and Little Greene are popular across Lindfield and Cuckfield, where the house stock dates from the 1700s to the early 1900s. For pre-sale properties, a neutral dark shade in navy, black, or deep green tends to appeal broadly.
We work to the client’s choice. Our role is to give you the information to choose well, not to push a preferred range.
Preparation and Priming
Preparation is where a front door repaint is won or lost. Old gloss on a timber door with multiple accumulated layers must be stripped or sanded to a sound base. Applying new gloss over soft, unstable existing coats results in a finish that looks good briefly and then bubbles or peels.
On sash window frames around the door and the porch surround, we can extend the scope to cover the full entrance area. For timber doors requiring stripping and restoration, see our wood painting page.

Our Front Door Painting Process
1. Site Assessment
We look at the door type, condition of existing paint, and any hardware that needs masking. We agree the colour and confirm the scope at this stage.
2. Hardware Masking
Letter boxes, knockers, numbers, and handles are masked carefully before preparation starts. Removing hardware entirely is preferred on timber doors where possible.
3. Preparation
Existing paint is sanded back to a sound surface, or stripped where necessary. Filler is applied to dents, holes, and surface damage. The door is cleaned and dried before priming.
4. Priming
A specialist exterior primer is applied to bare timber or prepared surfaces. uPVC surfaces get an adhesion primer. The primer stage is what makes the topcoat adhere and last.
5. Topcoat Application
Two coats of exterior gloss or satin are applied by hand brush. Panels, mouldings, and flat faces are worked in the correct sequence to avoid runs and brush marks.
Front Door Painting Costs in Haywards Heath
A front door repaint typically costs between £150 and £400 depending on door type, preparation required, and scope.

Door Type and Complexity
A four-panel Victorian timber door with deep mouldings takes longer than a flush modern composite. Period doors on Lindfield High Street properties typically require more preparation than newer doors elsewhere.
Composite or uPVC door (Bolnore Village or Burgess Hill) — adhesion prime and two topcoats, face only: £150–220.
Condition and Scope
Accumulated paint layers that are soft or flaking need stripping — this is what makes the difference between a finish that lasts and one that fails within a year. Victorian four-panel timber door (both faces, frame, and letterbox, full prep): £220–350.
Period cottage timber door, Lindfield High Street (four-panel, both faces, frame, and cill, strip and reprime): £260–400.
Combined Exterior Work
