Pebbledash Painting in Haywards Heath

1930s semidetached houses with pebbledash exterior in Haywards Heath

Haywards Heath Decorators paint pebbledash houses across Haywards Heath and Mid Sussex.

What we cover:

  • Pebbledash upper storeys — the partial finish common on 1930s and 1950s semis
  • Full pebbledash houses — all elevations, including gable ends
  • Surface preparation — pressure washing, biological growth treatment, pebble repairs
  • Two-coat masonry paint system — breathable finish built for the Sussex climate
  • Colour changes — from dated magnolia to contemporary grey, green, or off-white

Interwar and postwar semis with pebbledash upper halves are one of the most common property types in Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill. We work regularly on streets along Rocky Lane, Hazelgrove Road, and through the estate roads of Burgess Hill where pebbledash covers the top storey above the brick string course.

Pebbledash Painting Services

Pebbledash requires specialist techniques that differ from smooth render or standard masonry.

How Pebbledash Is Painted

Pebbledash is a rough exterior finish where small stones or gravel are set into a wet render coat. Standard short-pile rollers miss the recessed stones entirely, leaving pale patches that show in direct sunlight.

We use long-pile masonry rollers designed for deeply textured surfaces. Each pass is followed by a brush to work paint into any gaps the roller couldn’t reach. Two full coats are standard, and both factors — time and additional paint per square metre — are included in your quote from the start.

Preparation: Washing and Treating the Surface

Pebbledash that faces north or sits in a shaded garden position almost always carries biological growth — green algae, black mould, or patches of moss in the crevices between stones. Painting over contaminated pebbledash traps the growth beneath a sealed surface and the paint fails from underneath within one to three seasons.

Haywards Heath Decorators treat all biological growth before any paint is applied. We pressure wash the whole surface, apply a specialist mould treatment where needed, and allow it to cure before washing and painting. The preparation phase is what makes the finish last.

Colour Options and Paint Selection

Pebbledash colour changes are dramatic. A 1950s semi in dated magnolia looks transformed with a contemporary grey, warm white, or soft sage green. We can advise on colours that suit the property and the surrounding streetscape across Haywards Heath, Lindfield, Cuckfield, and the Burgess Hill estates.

We use breathable masonry paint throughout. Pebbledash sits over a sand-and-cement render coat that can hold moisture during winter — a non-breathable paint system traps that moisture and causes pebbles to loosen. Any RAL or BS colour can be matched.

Partial Pebbledash — Upper Storey or Decorative Bands

Many 1930s and 1950s semis in Haywards Heath, Lindfield, and Burgess Hill have pebbledash on the upper half only. The lower brick or plain render is left unpainted. Properties like those on Rocky Lane or Hazelgrove Road often show this split-finish pattern.

Where only the pebbledash band is being painted, we mask the lower section. The upper storey typically requires a scaffold tower or extended ladder — we assess access during the quotation visit. Where clients want the full exterior refreshed, we quote both elements together.

Pebbledash Repairs Before Painting

Over time, individual pebbles loosen and fall away from the render coat. The exposed bare patch is vulnerable to moisture ingress and looks poor once the surrounding area is freshly painted.

Where pebbles have detached, we repair the area using a compatible sand-and-cement mix and embed similar aggregate to match the existing texture. Minor surface cracking at window reveals or wall junctions is filled with flexible exterior filler before painting. On properties with widespread pebble loss, repairs are costed separately and quoted before the job begins.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site Visit and Quote

We assess the surface condition, note any biological growth or pebble loss, and measure the area. You receive a fixed quote before any work begins.

2. Preparation

Pressure washing and mould treatment where required. Repairs to any detached pebbles or surface cracks.

3. Masking

Windows, doors, sills, barge boards, and any adjacent brick or render are masked before painting starts.

4. First Coat

Applied by long-pile roller and worked in with a brush to ensure full coverage into the textured surface.

5. Second Coat

Applied once the first coat is fully dry. Best conditions run from April through September.

6. Inspection and Handover

We check coverage across all elevations before removing masking. Any missed patches are touched up before we leave.

Pebbledash Painting Costs in Haywards Heath

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01444 719922 for a precise quote.

Typical Price Ranges

Typical range: £550 to £2,200 depending on coverage and property size.

3-bed semi, pebbledash upper half: £550–£900. 3-bed semi, pebbledash throughout: £800–£1,500. 4-bed detached, fully pebbledashed: £1,200–£2,200. Scaffold tower hire if required: £200–£400 additional.

What Affects the Cost

Coverage area — upper half only versus full elevations — is the primary cost driver. A 3-bed semi upper-half job on Hazelgrove Road or Rocky Lane typically sits in the £550–£900 range.

Surface condition adds to preparation time. Properties with significant biological contamination or widespread pebble loss sit at the higher end of the range. Property height and access — where a scaffold tower is needed — is quoted separately.

Combining Services

Pebbledash painting is part of our wider exterior painting service. For brick, stone, and smooth rendered walls, see our masonry painting page.
