Living Room Painting Services

Over ten years working on Victorian and Edwardian front reception rooms across Mid Sussex. We understand how to cut in cleanly around original cornicing, picture rails, and multi-profile skirtings.

Walls and Ceiling

Most living rooms need walls and ceiling done together. We work systematically from ceiling down, cutting in first then rolling out to avoid lap marks. On older properties, we check surface condition first — hairline cracks get filled, dusty plaster gets sealed, and flaking areas are stabilised.

We use trade-grade emulsions suited to the surface type. Flat matt works well on textured period plaster; eggshell suits a cleaner, more modern finish.

Bay Window Alcoves

Bay windows are one of the trickier features in a living room. The return walls inside the bay catch light differently and colour matching must be consistent across every face. We cut in precisely along the reveals and back walls, keeping lines sharp where the bay meets the main wall.

Many Lindfield properties have deep bay reveals with original timber surrounds. We treat these as separate surfaces and prime accordingly before finishing.

Chimney Breast

A chimney breast is a natural focal point, often painted in a contrasting colour. We prepare the surface carefully and check for damp staining before painting — active staining needs to be treated first or it bleeds through the new finish.

Once preparation is done, we apply the agreed colour to the chimney breast face and returns, keeping the line crisp where it meets the adjoining walls.

Feature Wall

A feature wall works best when the surface is perfectly smooth. We spend time on filling and sanding before any colour goes on. Deep or dark colours require proper undercoating — skipping this step leaves the colour looking thin and patchy even after two topcoats.

We work with the agreed colour, application method, and sheen level. Standard emulsion, eggshell, and specialist finishes are all options.

Coving and Cornicing

Original plasterwork cornicing on Victorian and Edwardian properties in Lindfield and Cuckfield requires careful brush work. We cut in along each profile by hand, keeping ceiling white off the wall colour and wall colour off the ceiling white.

Coving joints and hairline cracks are filled with fine filler before painting. Picture rails get treated separately — if staying original white, we paint them before the wall colour to keep the line sharp.

Here’s How It Works

1. Free Quote Visit

We visit the property, assess the surfaces, and give a fixed written price.

2. Preparation

We fill cracks, sand back rough areas, and apply any necessary sealers before the first coat.

3. Cutting In and First Coat

All edges are cut in by brush. Walls and ceiling are rolled out to an even first coat.

4. Second Coat and Detail Work

Final coats are applied. Cornicing, picture rails, and skirting are finished by hand.

5. Final Check and Clean Up

We check the finished room in natural and artificial light, fix any thin areas, and leave the space clean.
